Alimony is money for support paid by one party to the other. The parties in a divorce case may agree to certain alimony terms, and Georgia courts may award alimony if it finds such an award is necessary.
Alimony is not a broad, blanket remedy in Georgia. It may be granted in the short term to help a spouse get back on his/her feet and/or re-enter the workforce. Alimony may also be granted more long-term in situations of a long-term marriage.
